Steve Ryder European Development Director

European Development Director

Steve Ryder comes to DLE with extensive retail experience. He is British and spent 34 years of his career with Tesco, the largest retailer in the UK, where he developed an expertise in store format development, store planning and design, remodel project planning, and space, range and display management.

As Store Design and Planning Director he was influential in many store format and design developments including Tesco Metro and Tesco Extra, the supercenter format, and many step changes in store decor and design. He has always been passionate about making physical stores more appealing and exciting for customers whilst at the same time being productive and profitable for the retailer.

Following 2 years supporting the Tesco international businesses in Asia and Central Europe with design development and format creation he moved to California in 2005 as part of the team that set up Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market. As Store Design and Planning Director he created the layout, look and feel of the original award winning 10,000 square foot format and rolled it out to nearly 200 sites. In 2010 he engaged DLE to undertake a refresh of the original design, which was successfully trialled in Whittier, CA and develop the Fresh and Easy Express format with the first store opening in Los Angeles.

With his extensive experience of working with design consultants in Europe, USA and Asia, Steve is uniquely placed to add both a client and international perspective.

Steve has a BA (Hons) in Geography from Newcastle University. This gave him an interest in the world which continues to this day. He loves to travel to less well known destinations and understand what makes these places tick. Last year he visited Bhutan and Romania and has trips to Myanmar, Chile and The Faroe Islands lined up.
